The Benefits of Sublimation Printing
Sublimation isn’t just about looks—it’s about performance too. Because the ink becomes part of the fabric, the print won’t crack, fade, or feel heavy, making it ideal for clothing that’s made to move.
That’s why it’s a top choice for activewear, sports uniforms, and promotional gear. The colours stay bright, the details stay sharp, and you can print across the entire garment—no restrictions on creativity. It’s also a low-maintenance option since the design won’t deteriorate in the wash or with daily wear.
Whether you’re in Old Bar or ordering from across Australia, Fab Art offers expert guidance to help you choose the best materials, designs, and sizing options for your needs. We’re all about making high-quality custom apparel that looks great and lasts.
What is sublimation printing & how does it work?
Sublimation is a printing process that uses heat to transfer dye directly into the fabric rather than on top of it. The result is a permanent, full-colour design that won’t crack, fade, or peel over time. Because the ink becomes part of the fabric itself, it feels completely smooth to the touch and can be washed repeatedly without losing quality. It’s most effective on polyester or poly-blend garments and is especially popular for sports uniforms and promotional clothing.
Is sublimation better than screen printing?
It depends on the purpose of the garment. Sublimation is ideal for complex, multi-colour or full-garment designs that need to stay vibrant over time. It’s also great for athletic wear because the print doesn’t interfere with the fabric’s breathability. Screen printing, on the other hand, is better for bold, simple designs and bulk orders, especially on cotton garments. Each method has its advantages, but for long-term durability and colour, sublimation is hard to beat.
Can I sublimate onto any type of fabric?
No, sublimation requires polyester-based fabrics to work properly. The ink needs to bond with the polymer molecules in the fabric, which is why cotton and other natural fibres aren’t suitable. For best results, garments should be at least 65% polyester, though 100% polyester yields the most vibrant and long-lasting finish. If you’re unsure what material to use, it’s a good idea to consult with your apparel provider before ordering.
